The Burning of Washington: Daniel Carroll of Duddington. A most important Autograph Document Signed "Danl. Carroll of Dudn". One page, 8" x 7", [Washington], May 10, 1816 offering for sale the burned out lot of Queen's Hotel, which with much of the rest of Washington, was burned to the ground by the British in 1814. He writes: "For Sale The subscribers will sell at public auction on Thursday the 23d Inst. at Queen's hotel the site of the Hotel, lately occupied by Tomlinson, & burnt by the British. This situation is so well known that a description is unnecessary. It is equal for a large Hotel to any in Washington. If not sold in one lot, it will be divided into five or six building lots, of about twenty six feet front each, fronting on the Capitol square. Terms made known on the day of sale, which will be accommodating to the purchaser." The British made quick work of destroying the young capital city in August 1814, burning the White House, Capitol, and other major public buildings. Daniel Carroll of Duddington was the nephew of Constitution signer Daniel Carroll and owned numerous parcels of land in the District of Columbia. Mounting remnants on verso with some show-through, usual folds, else very good. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
