As noted in his preface, Bushnell's goal here is to envision for the reader a time before European settlement in the Eastern United States. His extensive research throughout his life led to the bequeathment of his collection of photographs of his field work to the Peabody Museum at Harvard University [peabody.harvard.edu]. This book contains several photographs and illustrations of tribal life east of the Mississippi. The frontispiece is a color reproduction of the "Section of La Harpe Manuscript Map," circa 1720.
