The first in this auction of several of these fine sculptures that represent one of the best five or so recognized sculptural traditions across all of Asia. Documentation on Bululs can be found in many sources, and foreign collectors must primarily guard against modern reproductions that can be seen in the various tourist shops and handicraft galleries scattered around the Philippines. If you buy from a reputable source, that will not be a problem. This example has been cleaned of the dark wine or blood patina that usually coats them (which is believed to be good for attracting the right spirits) and in a Manila collection for about 30 years (many Asian women do not like anything "dirty" in their homes). Thin, classic style of a standing ancestral spirit, it is 24" tall and from the Kiangan sub-tribe of the Ifugao. Quite good-looking.
