Bull Run Battlefield Souvenir Pitcher Dated 1907
Bull Run Battlefield Souvenir Pitcher Dated 1907. There were two Civil War Battles of Bull Run fought at Manassas, Virginia. The first, in July 1861, was the initial major land battle of the war with inexperienced Union troops led by McDowell advancing against the Confederate army under Johnston and Beauregard. The Union troops were defeated and forced to retreat back to Washington. D.C. though the roads were blocked by civilians fleeing the scene; many of the society elite from Washington had traveled to the battlefield just 25 miles away. Bringing picnic lunches, they wanted to observe first hand the "easy" Union victory that was expected! The Second Battle of Bull Run was thirteen months later, when Robert E. Lee's Confederate Army attacked Pope's Union troops. The victory again went to the CSA. We speculate that this piece of pottery was possibly a souvenir from the 1907 United Confederate Veterans convention at Richmond. It is 3.5" tall with a base of nearly 3" in diameter and has a pouring spout, a handle, with a blue and yellow checkerboard design with "Bull Run Battlefield" on one side and "+ 1907 +" on the other. The condition is generally fine with a small chip on the spout and the expected crazing. A few other apparent minor condition issues actually appear to be manufacturing flaws. Not marked.
