Available in this lot we have a framed albumen silver photograph original showing the portrait of Bull Bear of the Southern Cheyenne dating to 1869. Bull Bear (1816-1892) was a Native American warrior and leader of the Cheyenne Dog Soldiers, one of the six military societies within the Cheyenne. Bull Bear lead the Dog Men for many years and represented them at the council of Camp Weld. The photograph print shows Bull Bear from the mid section up in a seated position wearing a nice suit and white neck tie. The photograph was taken in Darlington, Oklahoma in 1869. The piece is set into a gilt gold wood frame with a cream border around the print. The back of the piece shows a art gallery label reading "Bull Bear S. Cheyenne Dog Soldier Chief. Albumen print." and a print showing the back of the piece reading "Bull Bear Cheyenne Darlington Okla - Property of S M.M. Cor~~ Chilacca Okla 69 02-01-30". Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection and collected by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector Bruce also was the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman which was both part museum and gallery. The piece shows good condition overall with some light wear across the frame. The frame measures 12" wide by 13 7/8" tall with the photo measuring5" wide by 6 1/4" tall.
