Buffalo Division. The noted all-black
Buffalo Division." The noted all-black Army division. Original wool khaki dress tunic, or long-style jacket, with provenance. Belonged to artillery soldier Victor R. Brown, serial #2723492, presumed Private First Class (one stripe on sleeve), in the 92nd Division, which saw service at Meuse-Argonne and Lorraine. This was one of the largest divisions in the Army, with its own Black officers, infantry, machine gun battalion, field artillery regiments, trench-mortar battery, engineer regiment, and field signal battalion. Named the "Buffalo Soldiers" by the American Indians in the post-Civil War West, the buffalo became the symbol on its patch. Two medals are still attached to a pocket. This Buffalo Division formed in 1917 from selective servicemen taken from the country at large; another Buffalo unit saw service in World War II. Very fine, clean condition, and cap (non-matching, appears home-made). A superlative black history offering.
