William Frederick "Buffalo Bill" Cody (2/26/1846 – 1/ 10/1917) an American scout, bison hunter and showman was born in Le Claire, Iowa Territory.

Buffalo Bill started working at the age of 11 becoming rider for the Pony Express at age 15. Served on Union side in Civil War 1863 to the end of the war in 1865. After he became a civilian scout for the US Army during the Indian Wars, receiving the Medal of Honor in 1872. Performed in shows that displayed cowboy themes and episodes from the frontier and Indian Wars. Founded Buffalo Bill's Wild West in 1883, taking his large company on tours in the US. Starting in 1887 they preformed in Great Britain and continental Europe. Cody died on January 10, 1917. Cody was buried west of Denver on Lookout Mountain in Golden, Colorado on the edge of the Rocky Mountains, overlooking the Great Plains on June 3, 1917.
