This is an original August Buermann (Frank Gilham) made horse bit that is marked, "P'D DEC. 28 1886." This is the first Gal Leg bit design ever created. The first Gal Leg was thought to have been introduced circa 1887, but this piece was the first ever Gal Leg design and was patented December 28, 1886 by Frank Gilham of August Buermann. Frank Gilham, the bits inventor in the mid 1800's, was the first person to patent the "Gal Leg" design as the Assignor to August Buermann. All other Gal Leg designs were based off of this one. The bit selling in this lot is a very rare and early piece is overall a good bit with solid condition, with the bottom of the right foot being chipped. Very rare first production August Buermann horse bridal-bit. This comes with a print of the original patent paperwork. Bit measures 5.5"x6"
