Life-size Buddha depicted with peaceful expression and the gesture of granting protection

This large Buddha figure is made of wood and dates to the 19th Century Thailand. Buddha is displayed in the upright samabhanga stand on a round base. His right hand is raised to his chest and forms the abhaya mudra with palm turned forward. This is the gesture of fearlessness and granting protection. The fingers of the left hand are pointing towards the ground. Buddha is wearing a long carved robe in relief that is wrapped around his left shoulder. He has a peaceful, meditative expression, long ear lobes and deep neck folds. Buddha’s head is crowned by a high ketumala. Due to the remaining traces of gilding and pigment a graceful aesthetic is created.

The Buddha figure is in visually appealing condition with signs of wear consistent with age. Loss of material, especially on the back, color abrasion, drying cracks and pitting to the wood are visible. The height is 165 cm.
