This wood and alabaster depiction of a Buddha was made in Burma in the Mandalay style and date back to the 19th century. The figure is rendered in lacquer and gold and decorated with numerous glass and mirror stone inlays. Buddha is shown in padmasana, with both feet turned upwards. His hands are forming the bhûmisparsa mudra, the gesture of touching the earth. So his opened left hand is placed on his lap and his right hand is pointing to the earth. Buddha used this gesture to call the earth to witness the truth of his words. The enlightened wears a royal robe, which covers the entire body. It is richly decorated with curved ornaments and a gold element of iron. The facial expression shows a meditative, cheerful smile. The head forms a semicircular ushnisha and is decorated with a removable, open worked crown.



The Buddha shows usual signs of age and wear. Some stones are missing, color and gold abrasion, nicks, drying cracks and little loss of material here and there are visible. The figure has a height of 47 cm and a width of 27 cm. (lvp)
