This large Buddha figure of wood was made during the period from around 1870-1890 in Burma. The figure is decorated with gold and lacquer painting and ornate with numerous glass and mirror stones. Buddha is represented in padmasana with both feet are turned upwards. His hands show the gesture of touching the earth, also called bhûmisparsa mudra. In this pose, his opened left hand rests on his lap and his right hand is pointing with his fingers to the earth. Buddha used this gesture to call the earth to witness the truth of his words. The enlightened wears a richly pleated robe with accentuated hems. This garment covers the body and leaves his right shoulder bare. Buddha has a serene expression with a peaceful smile. The head shows a semi-circular ushnisha, which is adorned with further stones.



The Buddha figure is good condition with signs of age and use. Stones are missing, color and gold wear, nicks and drying cracks are visible. The figure has a height of 83 cm and a width of 62 cm. (lvp)
