SN: 114473A 'Third Model' 1883 vintage lever action repeating rifle reportedly owned by prominent Arizona figure & captain in Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders, William Owen O'Neill. During his lifetime "Bucky" was a newspaper editor, miner, politician, avid gambler, lawyer, sheriff and finally a captain in the Rough Riders where his was killed during the Spanish-American War. Rifle features a blued finish, 24 1/4" round barrel stamped "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860", dovetailed front sight with bead top German silver blade, flip-up ladder style rear sight graduated to 1,000 yards(missing elevator), full-length tube magazine, smooth trigger, knurled hammer spur, missing or removed dust cover, missing or removed grip safety, smooth walnut forend with metal cap and straight grip shoulder stock with "BUCKY O'NEILL/1887" carved in the right side & trapdoor carbine buttplate. Includes a factory letter for rifle #114734A, a brown leather rifle scabbard from Collins & Morrison of Omaha, Nebraska, the book "Buckey O' Neill" by Ralph Keithley, and a framed display with photos, correspondence with the Sharlot Hall Museum in Prescott, Arizona & a newspaper article relating to a "4440 Winchester" with the name Bucky O'Neill on it. Rifle displays a nicely aged brown patina showing some scattered dings and a few spots of dark pitting. Action is sound, the bore is very good+, the markings are clear though no caliber designation has been observed, and the wood stock are near good showing several cracks & some losses.
