This is an excellent large Buchanan Eared lance or spear point from the Sierra Nevada greater region. The Buchanan Eared is also referred to as the Humboldt Cluster and is a large lanceolate point with this example showing an outward recurve excurvate shape which flares out towards the base and a base that has a “V” concave, nearly a notch. The Buchanan Eared point was first discovered at the Buchanan Site at the Buchanan Reservoir in California by Michael Moratto in 1972. This point is considered to be a variant of the Humboldt point and can also be named a Humboldt Expanded Base. This example has been expertly carved from obsidian material and appears to be in fine condition. The Buchanan Eared point dated to 4,000-1,500 B.P. in the late to transitional Archaic era. The origin of this arrowhead is unknown and is from a Klamath Falls, Oregon collection. Measures 4 5/8”L.
