Bryant 1899 Sample Cigar Label by Schmidt & Co of New York. A lithographed 9" x 6" inner label picturing a portrait of the white-bearded poet and journalist surrounded by books, a globe, an inkwell, and patriotic symbols with gold-embossed decorative devices around. Bryant's ancestors on both sides came to America on the Mayflower. He studied law and was admitted to the bar, but poetry and journalism were his true loves. His poetry was in the English romantic style and expressed a strong love for the native New England countryside. He became editor of the New York Evening Post in 1829 and remained in that position until his death in 1878. A staunch abolitionist, he was a founder of the Republican Party and a supporter of Abraham Lincoln in 1860. This label has stock numbers and ordering information at the bottom showing that 100 sets of inside and outside labels could be ordered from Schmidt & Co. for only $2.90!
