Bruce Lee’s circa 1968 personally-owned and -used right-and-left handed brown leather focus mitts, each measuring approximately 9.5? in diameter and 1.75? thick. Includes numerous photos of Lee striking these mitts during training and exhibition, with several depicting Lee with his wife Linda and toddler son Brandon. In overall fine condition. Accompanied by a letter of provenance from Lee historian David Thadman, in part: “These Focus Mitts are documented in many photographs and martial arts pictorial magazines that have been circulated from 1967 until present day…I have, through photo investigation and research, identified this pair as his personally owned and used equipment…These Focus Mitts over the years have been displayed at many functions, including the famous World of Bruce Lee, run by Norman Borine, one of the first American Bruce Lee historians. These Focus Mitts were given directly to Herb Jackson from Bruce Lee. Herb Jackson was a close friend, student and confidant of Bruce Lee. Herb Jackson handed these Focus Mitts down to his son, Mark Ashton…These are in my opinion authentic beyond any question of a doubt.” Also accompanied by a copy of a letter of provenance from Mark Ashton, in part: “These focus mitts were given to my father Herb Jackson as a gift from Bruce Lee in and around 1968. My father Herb Jackson was a very close friend and confidant of Bruce Lee and was also one of his private backyard students in Los Angeles in the mid to late 1960s.”

On his journey to becoming an international movie star, Lee first became a devoted practitioner of martial arts, studying Wing Chun under master Yip Man before progressing to Gung Fu and eventually Jeet Kune Do, a non-classical system founded by Lee on July 9, 1967. Through a strict regimen of strength training and combat practice, Lee became a singularly powerful force whose thirst for knowledge and self-improvement aided in the meteoric development of both his physical abilities and subsequent acting career. Dated to shortly after his role as Kato on The Green Hornet, and originating from the very period Lee and his partner began instructing at The Jun Fan Institute of Gung Fu, these well-worn focus mitts palpably embody Lee’s principle that the best defense is a strong offense. Supported by a wealth of rock-solid provenance, these one-of-a-kind focus mitts not only symbolize Lee’s precise speed and power, but likewise his intense and inimitable passion.
