Incorporated in New York, John Hamilton Brown's company factory was located in Maine due to availability of power. Submitted for trials in the States and abroad as an upgrade from the massive stock of muzzle loading rifles left over after the Civil War. Built around a P53 Enfield rifle, with a blade/ bayonet lug front sight and folding leaf rear sight. The hammer is exposed and checkered, and the bolt is fitted with a round straight handle. Marked "BROWN MFG. Co. NEWBURYPORT, MASS. / PATENTED OCT.17.1871" on top of the bolt. Oil finished stock with 3 barrel bands, brass tip, ramrod, sling swivels and a flat butt. With an unmarked socket bayonet, 17" triangular blade with locking collar.

Very good plus, with a mixed gray and brown patina on the surface, along with a few areas of pitting. Stock is fine as repaired, with a mended crack visible on the wrist, scattered dings and small chips. Bayonet is fair, with spotting and patches of brown patina. Mechanically good.
