An Elgin watch mechanism in a nickel silver, open face Waltham swing-out (also called swing-ring) case with a train inlaid in copper on the reverse. Includes a brassy, 10" long T-bar chain attached to a 4" length terminating in a brassy and onyx fob containing the seal of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. Stem-wind, stem-set. Still runs! The face bears several hairline cracks. Lot includes an original plastic case with “Elgin Railroad Watches, Standard of the World, Elgin, Ill” and the company trademark printed on one side. The Brotherhood was first organized in 1883 as the Brotherhood of Railroad Brakemen (BofRB) in Oneonta, NY as a protective and insurance organization to insure better dealings with management. On 1 January 1980 the name was changed to Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen (BofRT) [Ref: ihc185.infopop.cc/eve /forums/a/tpc/f/6366042471/m/6906 061434]. The mechanism serial number (3750389) and the patent number on the case (APR.22.79.) help to date this watch: the mechanism dates to 1889 while the case was produced some time after 1879, when the swing-out style was patented by Ezra Fitch. - Woodward Collection -59000
