This bronze figure is a representation of Buddha Maitreya and was created in Nepal, about 1900. In Buddhist thought, he is the Buddha of the future, and is also called ‘The Lovely and Rich’. In this case he is seated in thebhadrâsana position with dangling legs on a throne. His hands are raised in front of his chest and show the gesture of teaching the law of the wheel, thedharmacakra Mudra. Two lotus flowers ascend to his shoulders and embed both a holy water vessel and the wheel of teaching. The figure is wearing precious jewelry and his head is adorned with a five leave crown. Open work ribbons of his garment surround his sides and fall on his forearms. A serene expression is visible on his face and a mandorla as well as a high topknot emphasized his grandeur.

The Buddha figure is in good condition with distinct natural patina and slight signs of age and wear. Small nicks and scratches are visible here and there. The height measures 35 cm, the width 20 cm and the depth 17 cm. (lvp)
