This is a very impressive bronze that captures the nobleness of the horse. The accuracy of anatomy and scale that V. Peter achieved is remarkable. This sculpture exhibits the relationship between the horse and the man. This statue measures 15? x 18.5? x 7?, is a great example of artistic mastery, and is set at a great price.
Early in the Twentieth Century, two trophies were competed for annually in stock judging contests at the International Live Stock shows at Chicago. The contests were open to all Agricultural Colleges of United States and Canada, each school competing sending a team of five men. One trophy, Deux Amis by V. Peter, was awarded to the team standing highest on horse judging. The other trophy, a bronze bull, was awarded to the team standing highest in cattle, sheep and swine. These trophies were given by the Union Stock Yards Company and if either trophy was won three times by any school, it became the property of that school. In 1906, the above team won the horse trophy for the second time. The 1907 team won again for the third year (the 1904 team also took first place). The beautiful bronze statue is proudly displayed as part of the Iowa State University Animal Science heritage.
The 1906 Iowa State Livestock Judging Team took second at the International Livestock Exposition in Chicago in cattle, sheep and swine.
