Born around 200 A.D., by 238 A.D., Valerian I held the title of consul, the highest elected office in the Roman Republic. He came to power in 253 A.D., after Trebonianus Gallus turned to him for help to defend against the usurper Aemilianus. He immediately appointed as Caesar his son Gallienus. After his defeat in the Battle of Edessa in 260 A.D., he was captured and killed by Shapur, somewhat destabilizing the entire Roman Empire.
