The Western Roman Empire came to an end in 476 A.D. after the expulsion of Romulus augustus and the death of emperor Zeno. But the Eastern or "Byzantine" empire endured. Anastasius I was the first post-collapse ruler in the east. Compare the rudimentary obverse on this coin with the artistically superior coinage of 4th century Rome. This lack of artistry reflected a diminution of the empire's wealth. JC-30101-134 JC-30234
