The Erlitou Culture

The Erlitou culture is an Early Bronze Age society that existed in China from around 1900-1600 BC in the region of Henan Province and southern Shanxi. The archaeological site, which includes a large palace area, was discovered in the 1950s and has been intriguing scholars and researchers ever since. Erlitou had a sophisticated bronze casting industry, with several workshops, which produced some of the earliest known Chinese bronze vessels made for the ritual consumption of wine. The finds at Erlitou included bronze tools, weapons, objects with inlaid turquoise and important JUE vessels – three-legged cups with handles and long spouts. Other common artifacts of this culture were DING, JIAO, JOA, PAN and ZUN vessels, which are considered the precursors of the vessels of the later Shang and Zhou dynasties.
