Bronze & Silver Mount Moroccan Jambiya c. 20th C
Featured in this lot is this beautifully constructed bronze and silver mount Moroccan Jambiya circa early/mid 20th century. A jambiya, also known as a shibriyeh in the Levant, is a specific type of dagger with a short curved blade with a medial ridge that originated from Yemen that have spread throughout the Middle East, the Arab world and parts of Southeast Asia. Each region has its own differences in the curvature of the blade; the Jordanian shibriyeh is typically not curved unlike the Yemeni jambiya. The jambiya handle often tells of the social status of the man who wears it. This jambiya is constructed of bronze and silver mounting. The silver mount is visible on the sheath and is highly decorated with intricate geometric designs throughout. The reverse side of the sheath shows the bronze layer and three silver mount star designs. Two large loops are situated on the left and right side of the sheath used for connecting to a belt or garments. The black painted wood handle shows twisted bronze ropes down the center and features for silver mounting. The blade shows a slight curve and a notch on either side of the blade, showing where the sharpening and grinding began. The jambiya dagger shows good condition overall with slight wear and light patina present from its age and handling over the years, but no signs of major damage or wear is present. The jambiya dagger measures 16 5/8" L x 5 3/8" W x 1" D and weighs 1 pound.
