This exquisite bronze sculpture was made during the 18th / 19th century and represents a so-called ‘scholar's rock’. Traditionally these stones were naturally occurring rocks, which were appreciated by Chinese scholars for their aesthetic qualities and a favorite motif in classical Chinese painting. Larger rocks were often displayed in traditional Chinese gardens. Inspired by these natural rocks, the present piece is of naturalistic form with holes, rough edges and graduating patina nuances. A beautiful and decorative object that would have been placed on a scholar’s desk. The sculpture is presented on a matching wooden base of naturalistic shape.

The sculpture is in good condition with minor signs of wear consistent with age. It measures 15 cm in height (without base).
