Bronze of Zhang Guolao, who is considered as the patron saint of old people and should bring blessing of children

This bronze figure, made of two parts, was made during the 19th/20th century China. The sculpture shows Zhang Guolao, one of the eight Immortals of Chinese mythology. According to legend, Zhang Guolao and his donkey have eaten a charmed meal and became immortal. Here he is depicted riding on the back of his donkey. The animal has raised his head, the erect ears are alert and the fine bridle covers its body. Zhang Guolao is wearing a robe with fine cloud pattern and the face, beard and eyebrows are precisely worked out.



The bronze figure is in good condition with usual signs of age and use. The right hand is missing, patina wear, little loss of material on the back as well as scratches and nicks are visible. The height measures 23.5 cm and the width is 20 cm.
