Ardhanarishvara

In Sanskrit Ardhanarishvara means ‘the Lord who is half woman’ and describes an androgynous form of the Hindu God Shiva together with his consort Parvati. The being is depicted with a male (right) and a female (left) half of the body. Some figures are rendered with two, three, four or eight arms. The upper body is often bare, with Shiva wearing a loincloth and Parvati draped in a sari. The hair and headdress are usually divided in two and both halves hold their respective attributes. Ardhanarishvara illustrates the Hindu concept that the female aspect of God is inseparable from the masculine aspect of God.

Condition: The figure is in good condition with light signs of age. One attribute in the hand shows a loss. The height (without base) measures 43 cm.
