Born in 328 A.D., Valens was the younger brother of Valentinian I, who appointed him emperor of the east shortly after rising to power. At the death of Valentinian I, Valens served as co-emperors with his nephews Gratian and Valentinian II. Valens' defeat and death at the Battle of Adrianople in 378 A.D. marks the beginning of the collapse of the western empire. �
