Born in 359 A.D., Gratian was the son of Valentinian I. In 367 A.D. he became Augustus under his father. Gratian was the last Roman emperor to mount a campaign across the Rhine. A Christian Gratien persecuted Roman pagans. Generations earlier, Romans were expected to worship as pagans, while Christianity was outlawed. Although Gratian enjoyed a long reign, he minted comparatively few coins. JC-30101-161 JC-30261
