Constantius II, born in 317 A.D., was the second of three sons born of Constantine the Great. He initially ruled alongside his brothers Constantine II and Constans. When Constanstine II was defeated by Constans, the latter gained sole control of the western empire, leaving Constantius II to rule the eastern territories. When Constans was himself later defeated by the usurper Magentius, Constantius successfully attacked Magentius, becoming sole Augustus. Constantius II issued a tremendous amount of coinage, and his coins are among those most commonly found in hoards. He fell ill and died in 361 A.D.
