The reverse on this coin features the emperor literally stepping on a child sized captive, reading VIRTVS EXERCVIT "the courage of the army". Arcadius was born on New Years Day of 377 A.D. He was the eldest son of Theodosius I. He ruled the east, whilst his younger brother Honorius governed in the west. Considered a weak ruler, Arcadius was often overshadowed by his wife, Aelia Eudoxia. When he died in 408, he was little more than a figurehead. JC-30101-58
