Circa 1780. Was dredged up from Galveston Bay in the vicinity of The Strand in 1931 or 1932. It was in the approximate position of where several Jean Lafitte's ships were sunk during a massive hurricane on September 12, 1818. Smooth bore bronze 4 pounder cannon with 3-inch bore, muzzle to cascabel is 31" with mid-mounted 2" trunnions 16" behind muzzle. First and second reinforce rings and muzzle have been channeled. Muzzle notched for direct sighting. Sits on a modern fabricated wooden garrison carriage with quillon and 4 wooden wheels. According to the supporting paperwork, the cannon was likely used on the privateer brig CONCORD. The gun was liekly cast in South Carolina during the American Revolution. The cannon was acquired in the 1970s by Sam Nesmith while he was with the Institute of Texas Culture in San Antonio.
