These mid-size Axle Caps were found in the Ordos region and were for local use around today's Lanzhou or Dunhuang…..as there were no long-distance roads of a type (along the Silk Route) to support Chariot use at that time (Camel caravans were the primary means of travel). They are fairly well matched in size, simplistic workmanship, and patina (Ordos type of patina with virtually no green) and the pins that held them in place were likely of hardwood (that did not survive the ages). 2-7/8" long, and 2" and 2-1/8" across at the bases (which are tapered inwards), they are Han period (206BC - 220AD) or slightly after. A wealthy local merchant was their likely user. Very scarce and historical.
