This is a simple yet elegant bronze sculpture of Buddhist
Bodhisattva Ti Tsang P'usa. The scepter can be repositioned and
removed. It fits easily in the grasp of the fingers. There is a
small stamp on the
back of the head. This icon was discovered in Dunhuang, China,
near the western end of
the Great Wall. Since ancient times, Dunhuang has been the
western hub of commerce and culture along the Silk Road
between India, Tibet and China.

Ti Tsang P'usa is an extremely popular Bodhisattva among
Chinese and Japanese Buddhists. 'Ti Tsang', meaning 'Earth-
Store' is a direct translation of the Bodhisattva's Sanskrit name
Ksitigarbha.

Ti Tsang is seated upon a lotus throne with a kind and
benevolent meditative pose. He wears the robe of a Northern
Buddhist monk and on his head is the five-leave crown, where
the representation of a Dhyani-Buddha can be seen on each of
the leaves. In his left hand he holds the Cintamani ? the
precious flaming pearl - which has vast magical powers beyond
description. In his right hand is the Khakkhara - a ringed-staff
carried by Buddhist monks in their travels so that the sounds
caused by the jingling rings can warn small animals and insects
of their approach lest they be trod upon and killed. It is also
sometimes called the alarm-staff.
The Khakkhara is not only meant to warn small and crawling
creatures of his approach but also to inform people of his
