Broadside. Lecture...in Hospital Chape
Broadside. "Lecture...in Hospital Chapel by Col. J.J. Geer, late Chaplain of the 183rd Ohio V.I...The Colonel has just arrived from Wilmington, N.C. with the footless prisoners from Andersonville, Georgia, and will refer to his incarceration in three rebel penitentiaries, four county jails, twelve military prisons, his escape at Macon, Ga., his travels barefoot 200 miles to the Ocomulgee and Altemaha Swamps, hunted by cavalry and bloodhounds, fed and assisted by negroes, his subsequent recapture, etc. The Lecture will, no doubt, be an interesting one, and a cordial invitation is extended to all, soldiers and citizens. Front seats reserved for ladies. U.S.A. Hospital, York, Pa., July 6, 1866." In bold lettering. 7 x 81/4. Fine. A splendid item: the prisons of the Civil War have been characterized as the "portals to Hell." While there were actually well over 1,000 sites which held prisoners, material relating to many of them is rare.
