British naval officers sword with throat of scabbard inscribed in period script letters “CaptN James Molyneux R.N., H.M.S. Courageux fought under Nelson at “The Battle Of The Nile”, Died SeptR 8th, 1833”. The sword remains in good original condition showing considerable original gilt drifted to patina with good rap on the handle and just normal aging. The scabbard shows some losses and repair with tape and normal aging. The area of the inscription is completely un-cleaned and absolutely original and there is a collection or museum number 1387 painted beneath the inscription. The blade is fair to good with some light cleaning, aging and slight pitting. The “Battle of the Nile” was one of the most significant victories of the British Navy and this battle established Admiral Lord Nelson as “the commander of the seas” and crushed the French Navy. Capt. Molyneux was promoted for bravery in this action as was Capt. Corcoran (later Admiral) who was known as “the lion of the sea”. This very interesting and significant Naval sword was recently discovered in the South where it was brought to a leather maker who repaired the scabbard and he wisely advised the family that owned it to leave it “completely as found and in out of the attic condition“.
