British Proofed Peabody Breech Loading Rifle
Peabody breech-loading rifle manufactured by the Providence Tool Company, Providence, Rhode Island, around 1866. The rifle has a blued barrel and bands with casehardened receiver, hammer, lever and buttplate. The stock and forearm are oil-finished black walnut. The barrel is fitted with a block front sight that doubles as a lug for a socket bayonet and a folding rear sight. The rifle has a steel ramrod with flared tip. The left side of the receiver is stamped with the five-line Peabody patent dates and Providence Tool Company markings. European "Crown/V" proofmarks are stamped on the top of the barrel and receiver. The standard oval "WC" inspection mark applied by the Providence Tool Co. is visible on the left stock wrist.

Condition: Fine. The rifle retains 60% of the original vivid case colors on the receiver, hammer, and lever mixed with extensive surface rust. The bottom of the buttplate has moderate storage wear and finish loss. The barrel retains 75% of the blue finish with some small patches of surface rust. The stock and forearm are in very fine condition with light storage wear. The rifle appears to be un-issued and shows only light storage wear.
