Ink signatures of eight of Britain’s most notable and prolific men in mid-Victorian era political and social circles, on an off-white 7 x 8.5 guest book page from the Prince of Wales’s state visit to India in 1875–76, all dated December 17, 1875. Signers are: Lord Charles Beresford, Major General Sir Arthur Ellis, Sir Joseph Fayrer, Charles Harbord, 5th Baron Suffield, Joseph Heneage Finch, Earl of Aylesford, Sir William Howard ‘Willie’ Russell, General Sir Dighton Probyn, and Lord Alfred Paget. Suede-matted and framed to an overall size of 12.25 x 15. In fine condition. The Prince of Wales’s tour of India was considered to be a great success that cemented the ‘Jewel in the Crown’ and the status of the Raj in the British Empire. Thirty-two aides and equerries accompanied the Prince on what has been described as more of a social, convivial event than a state visit by a senior statesman. Certainly, those chosen to accompany ‘Bertie’ were some of the most distinguished men of the mid-Victorian era. For more detailed biographical information on each of the signers click here.
