British General Charles O'Hara (Yorktown) ALS
British General Charles O'Hara of Yorktown Fame Autograph Letter Signed, "Chas. O'Hara", three pages, 8" x 10", Gibraltar, March 16, 1796, to Major General Ross at the Marquis Cornwallis's, Whitehall, London. As Governor of Gibraltar, Ross pleads with his superiors for the garrison's retention of two capable Corps of Engineer officers, Major Fyur and Captain Dickens. This letter carries an excellent red wax seal depicting a lion passant. Soiling, smoothed folds, good condition. Charles O'Hara (1740 - 1802) surrendered Cornwallis's sword to American General Benjamin Lincoln at Yorktown. This indignity was followed some twelve years later when O'Hara was forced to surrender to a young Napoleon Bonaparte. Despite being in the wrong wars at the wrong times, O'Hara enjoyed career advancement by dint of faithful service to the crown.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
