British Garrison in New York Manuscript Document (British Garrison in New York) Manuscript Document
(British Garrison in New York) Manuscript Document Signed "Da Scott Q. M." one page, 6" x 7.5", New York, October 9, 1769. Entitled "Return of Money in lieu of Bedding due to the Officers of the Royal Regiment of Artillery Quartered at this Place from the 3d. July 1768 to ye 3d July 1769... ", the document lists eleven officers from major to lieutenant noting their dates of arrival and departure (most were present in New York at the time) and the funds owed, totaling £8-6-3. Docketed on verso. This seemingly innocuous bill for funds "in lieu of Bedding" highlights the controversy over colonial obligations to homeowners to provide shelter to regular British troops and officers under provisions of the Quartering Act. Tensions in New York would boil over into riots in January 1770 now known as the Battle of Golden Hill. A similar disturbance in Boston would result in the Boston Massacre two months later. Small tear with minor loss at top margin, very light uneven toning, else fine. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
