This is a late Regency or early Victorian era 1828 pattern officer's shako for the Foot Guard. The body is composed of black beaver skin with a black patent top, front peak and "V" shaped reinforcement on the sides. The plate has a large gilt rayed star with a large Victorian crown above it and a smaller silvered rayed star on top with an enameled Order of the Garter over the battle honor "PENINSULA". Above the plate extending out of the top is a red over white woolen pompon. The gilt chin scales are backed with velvet and have circular ear bosses with a lion standing on the Victorian crown. The sweat band and front peak lining are green leather and there is a cotton cloth lining. Inside the top is a "Hawkes Mosley & Sons" paper label.
