British Cavalry Style Percussion Carbine with Tower Lock and Antebellum Southern Markings

Blade front and notch rear sights, with a swiveling ramrod link on the underside of the barrel and no makers marks on the breech. The lock plate has a checkered hammer, with "crown/V.R" behind the hammer and a faint "TOWER" marking ahead. Smooth straight wrist stock, with 2 barrel bands, a brass handrest trigger guard, sling swivels, a brass patch box and a flat brass buttplate. On the underside of the stock, ahead of the trigger guard, are two stamps, "MONTGOMERY/CS/INSPECTED" and "WIN(illeg.)/I(illeg.)/A(illeg.)", and another stamp reading "(illeg.)ERS/(illeg.)ON CO./ALABAMA" on the right side of the buttstock. Notes from the consignor state that the partially worn markings are from the Winter Iron Works of Montgomery, Alabama, one of the top producers of steam engines in the Antebellum South and a major manufacturing center for the Confederacy.

Poor. The steel components show a gray patina overall, with shallow pitting and streaks of brown. The tang screw is absent from the barrel, and some other components may be replaced. The patch box is a crude replacement. The stock shows a number of cracks and chips, most prominent on the left side of the buttstock and around the barrel tang. Mechanically good.
