British Barnett Flintlock Indian Trade Musket Dated 1834

This is an example of a Northwest flintlock trade musket manufactured by the famous British company Barnett. The lock plate is marked "BARNETT" over the date "1834" behind the hammer with a "Fox/EB" proof mark (faint) struck ahead of the hammer. The lock and hammer have a simple double line border. The upper left barrel flat is stamped with a British "CROWN/GP" proof and a British "CROWN/V" proof followed by the letters "TB" for Thomas Barnett, head of the Barnett organization before 1850. An illegible proof is stamped on the top barrel flat. The part octagon barrel is equipped with a blade front sight and there are no provisions for a rear sight. The ornate brass side plate is shaped like a mythical serpent/dragon known as the Hudson's Bay Fuke, a common ornament of 19th century trade muskets, and shows great detail. Three screws hold the side plate in place. The side plate, ramrod pipes and flat buttplate are brass. The full length stock is smooth with a copper band near the tip of the forearm and two ramrod pipes. The buttplate is secured to the stock by seven tacks. Complete with a swollen tipped wooden ramrod.

Very good. The barrel has a smooth mixed brown-gray patina with minor pitting at the muzzle. The action and trigger guard have a smooth dark patina. The brass is fine. The stock is also very good showing chipping an a chunk of wood missing near the lock plate, a few age cracks and some minor handling marks with most of the varnish remaining. Action functions but needs adjustment. Overall a solid example of a flintlock musket manufactured by a company that lead the way for trade guns throughout the Hudson Bay fur trading region.
