Charles Williams typed letter signed referring to the beginning of WWII in England. Williams was in Oxford's literary group ''Inklings'', with J.R.R. Tolkien & C.S. Lewis. Dated 17 October 1939, letter on Oxford University Press stationery is addressed to his contemporary Mabel Hill, a writer (not the artist of the same name) in Massachusetts. Williams writes, ''This is only a line to thank you for your letter and to say how delighted I am that you have found me useful. I had intended to devote a whole course of lectures this winter to the Prelude when I might have had something to say. But alas, the devastation of our normal life over here has cut all that out. Tiresome! Yours very sincerely, [signed] Charles Williams''. Single-page letter measures 8'' x 10''. Creasing and paper remnant to verso at top center, else near fine.
