signed Geo. S. Greene/Brig. Gen. beneath portrait and For Gen. Ruger on verso beside blue-green two cent revenue stamp, no back mark.

Greene was an 1823 West Point graduate who became Colonel of the 60th NY with advent of war. Among the oldest field commanders in the army, Greene was promoted brigadier general in April 1862 and served with distinction in both theaters for the duration. Greene was particularly noteworthy at Gettysburg where his New Yorkers of the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, 12th Corps grudgingly held off repeated Confederate attacks on Culp’s Hill, the dominant terrain feature of the shaky Union line. Green’s inspired defense is recounted in the recent January 2009 issue of Gettysburg Magazine in an article by Richard Urban entitled, Absolutely Essential to Victory: Brig. Gen. George S. Green’s Brigade and the Fight for Culp’s Hill. Greene later transferred west with the 12th Corps and was severely wounded at Wauhatchie in October 1863. His wound prevented him from any further field service and he mustered out in April 1866 as brevet major general.

Descended directly in the family of General Thomas H. Ruger
