Lot of seven pieces. A near-complete set of these extremely rare post-Confederation tokens struck in copper. According to P.N. Breton (1894), only three sets of Breton-590 to Breton-597 were produced “in commemoration of different kings and other rulers who have reigned during the past fifty years.” Although the tokens were ostensibly struck for the Montreal German Glee Club (Gesangverein Teutonia), which was founded in 1835, it is unknown who made them or why. The Breton-590 to Breton-597 set appears to be much rarer than its counterpart (Breton-598 to Breton-605). Michael Joffre has never come across another set in all his years of looking, and this cataloguer can find no record of another public appearance.
This lot includes: BR 591, Alfonso XII; BR 592, Christian IX; BR 593, Victoria; BR 594, Pius IX; BR 595, Napoleon III; BR 596, Alfonso XIII; BR 597, Garibaldi. Each features toned glossy brown surfaces with mirrorlike fields. Extremely rare and worth a premium bid.
