American author (1836–1902) best known for his colorful tales of California pioneers, including the much-anthologized story ‘The Outcasts of Poker Flat.’ Partial self-contained ANS, clipped from a longer letter, one page, 5 x 3, no date. Final part of a longer letter reads, “I have great pleasure in offering you my autograph as a memento of our pleasant luncheon…” In fine condition, with trimming as noted, a few vertical creases and some light toning.
