Scarce Brazilian Contract Winchester Model 1866 4th Model Lever Action Carbine, #168501, .44 CF cal., 20'' blue barrel, brass frame, walnut stock and handguard, with iron buttplate. Mfg'd 1891. These scarce Winchester centerfire Carbines were assembled very near the end of production with only a small fraction of total production being in the centerfire configuration. In an article in the Winter 2011 Winchester Collectors magazine, Michael Carrick states that Carbines in the serial number range between 167866 to 168972 on Winchester Order No. 4430 show that most were in a 1000-shipment of Carbines to Brazil and are usually converted to centerfire, yet retaining the double rimfire pins so that either cartridge could be used. A Cody Firearms information sheets shows this gun to be in .44 CF on Order No. 4430, having been shipped 5-13-1891. (A copy of this periodical and information sheet are included.) Condition is very good. Barrel, mag tube and band have toned moderately, but address is mostly legible. Smoothing to brass sides of frame with some replacement screws. Stock has smoothed considerably and shows oil darkening near metal surfaces. Action remains crisp, bore is fair. Est.: $6,500-$9,000. (Antique)
