Braxton Bragg: Superlative Post-War Autograph Letter on His New Life "As a Thing Contaminated." Autograph Letter Signed, 4 pages, recto and verso, 5" by 8", New Orleans, April 8, 1867; addressed to "My Dear Major." In excellent condition. A long and fascinating account of the unfortunate condition of the South during Reconstruction, and Bragg's own difficulties finding employment. In part: "Indeed, I find what was formerly a passport to the hearts of our people - prominence in our cause - rather a drawback now. So timid have they become under the heels of the despots, especially the wealthy and large business men, that a prominent rebel is avoided as a thing contaminated... Especially is this the case with those who scorn to degrade themselves by ignoring the past, and seeking amnesty for the future in a spirit of assumed humility... Unable to resist, I shall submit as does Jefferson Davis, to the outrages and indignities heaped upon us... No human power can induce me to aid in riveting the chains which are to bind our people in the future... Not even the hope of amnesty... can alter my position." From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
