Offered in this lot is a Brass Four Draw Ship's Hand-held Retractable Spyglass Telescope, circa late 19th Century, unmarked, with brass lens cover. Extends from 8" closed to 28" fully open. This lightweight telescope is reminiscent of the brass spyglasses originally used by 17th century ship captains and other seafaring mariners. The telescope, often called “bring 'em near”, is iconic when it comes to ocean navigation during this period and was used to spot landmarks and islands from a distance in order to plot a course. They also allowed people to spot enemy ships and bases at a safe distance. Each draw extends fully, spyglass focuses as intended. This spyglass is in nice working condition, the brass exterior exhibits scratches and dents from age and use, patination observed throughout. Weight 1lb, 4oz.
