Branch Rickey politely declines a speaking engagement at a YMCA function and writes in part: “You have great friends. George Southworth is just about as wholesome a soul as I know of anywhere and I have very fond recollections of Alan Roudebush. He was a peach.” Branch Rickey was a major league baseball innovator who will be best remembered for breaking the color barrier by hiring superstars Jackie Robinson and Roberto Clemente.
